Basics of Wooden

Decking

Wood changes its color

Wood is a natural product that is exposed to extreme conditions due to the influence of the weather. The varying greying of the wood is a natural process that does not affect its quality.

Slate formation

Cracking and slate formation can never be ruled out with wood decking. Regular care minimizes this risk.

Lifespan

Decking planks should be oiled at least twice a year with mafi decking oil. Sufficient ventilation of the decking construction also helps to maintain its value. On average, a terrace can be used for up to 30 years.

Possible discoloration

In the beginning, natural wood ingredients may be washed out and cause discoloration of adjacent components. Appropriate distances must always be maintained.

Substrate and

Foundation

Wooden decking can be laid on different substrates. The prerequisite is the condition as described. Possible are, for example:

Gravel bed or drainage concrete on natural soil

The substrate must be compacted to ensure the necessary, permanent load-bearing capacity. It may be advisable to lay a weed fleece to prevent plants from growing through. The fleece must be water-permeable. Any unevenness can also be softened with rubber pads if necessary.

Solid surface as substrate (e.g. concrete slab or existing stone terrace)

Pedestal supports can be optimally installed and even dowelled onto these substrates. Any slopes can be compensated for with height-adjustable pedestals.

Insulated roof terraces or flat roofs

It is essential to ensure a material separation between the pedestal support and the sealing film so that any plasticizer migration does not cause leaks. A rubber granulate mat should, therefore, be laid under the pedestals. It also protects against damage during installation and absorbs the point load of the pedestals better (especially with sloped insulation systems).

Substructure

Aluminum profiles are among the most commonly used substructures. Please note the following:

Height

The connection to other components such as patio doors, usually determines the height. Minor height differences can be compensated for with the help of pedestals. Together with the aluminum rails, they make up the height of the substructure. Installation heights that exceed 60 cm must be assessed and checked as structurally load-bearing.

Alignment

The substructure should be aligned horizontally to ensure optimum stability and comfort. Depending on the chosen pedestal support, the height can be adjusted and even a slight slope can be compensated.

Fastening the aluminum rails

The aluminum rails should be fastened to appropriate pedestal supports. Depending on the system, this can be done using a clip connection or a lateral screw connection with stainless steel screws.

Distances

The distance between the individual rows of pedestal bearings must not exceed 40 cm. The distance between the supports must not exceed 70 cm. Positioning the pedestals with an offset reduces the amount of material required. This offset must not be applied to the edge areas.

Extension of the rails

Depending on the selected system, an overlapping rail system or a system with connectors can also be used to extend the substructure. It is also possible to “butt” onto the pedestal support. The latter is common for simple aluminum rails.

Laying Types

Depending on the desired look, local conditions, the dimension of the material and the size of the decking area, the boards can be laid in different ways. Particularly popular are:

Basics for

Installation

Moisture is the most common cause of damage to decking boards. It is necessary to ensure ideal ventilation and professional installation of the boards and substructure:

1. Distance to the substrate

The substructure must maintain a distance of at least 30 mm from the substrate to achieve sufficient rear ventilation.

2. Using pedestals

Also, avoid direct contact between the substructure strip and the substrate by working with pedestals. Depending on the system, the height can also be adjusted.

3. Surrounding components

Direct contact between the decking board and other components must be prevented - a lateral distance of at least 20 mm must be maintained (e.g. house wall, pool tiles). If a wooden side finish is installed, a distance of 50 mm from the substrate is recommended.

4. Avoid wood contact surfaces

Wood-on-wood contact surfaces should be avoided, as these lead to permanent damp patches due to the capillary effect, which in turn cause rotting.

5. Substructure & plank

By using our connector system, you automatically create a gap between the substructure strip and the wood, which also guarantees good rear ventilation.

6. Joint width

The joint width between the planks should be at least 6 mm. If the joints are too narrow, impurities will get stuck, preventing the water from draining properly.

7. End joints of the planks

If boards are joined lengthwise (at the front), a gap of at least 7 mm must be maintained. This longitudinal joint must not lie directly above the substructure strip to allow water and dirt to drain away and prevent waterlogging.

8. Regular checks

Check regularly that all water drains/joints are free of dirt. Oil mafi decking boards at least twice a year with the appropriate mafi decking oil.

Elements for

Installation

The following elements must be defined for the installation:

1. Choice of system

Our decking planks are produced as standard for combination with a Senofix connector. For this purpose, a corresponding groove is milled into the plank, which aligns itself precisely with the connector. On request, we also offer a second system with a matching Konekto connector and a milled groove. Both systems allow invisible screwing and the replacement of individual planks.

2. Choice of substructure

Depending on the application, we offer two options for an aluminum substructure. With the Sihga TefaFix rail, you get a high-quality, black-coated substructure rail that remains true to the system. The rail system has a high-quality connection solution and saves time during installation by simply clipping onto the matching pedestal supports. Our second option is based on a bare aluminum strip that is screwed laterally over the pedestal supports provided.

3. The right pedestals

Our pedestals have a different range of heights, which must be selected depending on the height of the decking construction to be achieved. In the Sihga system, we offer two different pedestals (JustiFix II) as well as two adapter heights, all prepared for clip-on installation of the Tefafix aluminum rails. Four pedestals are available for screwing the bare aluminum rails to the side.

Cleaning

Cleaning the wooden decking is central to its longevity and the damage prevention. We recommend carrying out the following steps regularly:

1. Smooth surface

Thanks to our smooth surface, our planks get less dirty as there are fewer uneven areas and grooves where dirt can accumulate. Fungal and algae infestation is also less likely with the planed, smooth surface. The increased resistance due to our chemical-free, thermal treatment is added to this.

2. Remove coarse dirt

Sweep the patio to remove leaves, twigs and other coarse dirt. Use a broom with medium bristles so that you do not damage the wood.

3. Wet cleaning

Rinse the decking surface with a garden hose and ensure that the decking surface is completely and evenly wet. Processing with a high-pressure cleaner is not recommended.

4. Cleaning agent

Our decking boards can be cleaned with our decking soap. To do this, simply apply the soap mixed with sufficient water to the boards and work it lengthwise with a brush or scrubbing brush. Be careful not to apply too much pressure, as this could damage the wood. Then rinse the planks with water.

Care

Regular maintenance with mafi decking oil has proven to be recommended to prevent cracking and slate formation.

1. Frequency

For optimum maintenance of the decking boards, the entire surface should be treated with mafi decking oil twice a year.

2. Efficiency

1 liter of decking oil is sufficient for approx. 8–10 m2, depending on the absorbency of the wood. The complete curing time is approx. 24–48 hours, depending on the weather and temperature. The decking boards should be dry and clean before starting maintenance.

3. Application

The oil can be applied with a brush, roller or cotton mop. The decking must be thoroughly cleaned beforehand. Intense sunlight should be avoided if possible. Excess oil must be removed with a clean cotton cloth.

4. Polishing out

Ideally, the surface should then be polished with a polishing pad. This increases the resistance even further.

5. ATTENTION!

Risk of spontaneous combustion! Oil-soaked cloths, pads or other absorbent materials must be moistened with water and dried in the open air. This also applies to short breaks in work.

6. Degreying wood

Over the years and through exposure to UV light, the wood turns grey. If you want to counteract this effect, use the mafi greying remover. This reduces the greying of the wood and refreshes the overall appearance.
